I used Photoshop Elements since variant two and I strongly believe it’s the best photo editing program available for under $100. It’ll do most of the editing tasks that the full variant of Photoshop does but at a small percentage of the cost. It’s the software I have my “Digital Photography” and “Digital Drawing and Painting” students use for the college courses I teach.

If you’re serious or semi serious about editing your photos I greatly recommend that you buy this. Also, an vital benefit of learning (and using) Elements is that if you choose to someday move up to the full variant of Photoshop all the stuff you learned translates to the costly program. As well, there’s a TON of instructional material available online (most of it free!) and in books that will assist you learn this program.

I’ve included a short video showing some of the features of Elements ten and how they compare with the same features in Photoshop CS5.

If you just want an easy program to use to edit some photos now , then you may be able to find cheaper software programs, and many online programs that are free. One good free online application is Sumo Paint.

My suggestions to current Photoshop Elements users:

1. Element nine Users: The new features in Elements ten just deal with organizing your photos and many fast and easy templates and photo effects. For the most part, I would not recommend upgrading to Elements ten if you have Elements 9.

2. Elements 3 8 Users: I recommend upgrading to Elements ten because there was a big improvement between variants eight and nine (content aware, puppet warp, and the capability to add masks to layers).

Buyer review from the Vine™ Program () Photoshop Elements (PSE) ten like its predecessor versions is a picture editor with a spectrum of features that will quickly surpass the expertise (and time available to tinker) of most amateur digital photographers.Even greatly experienced ones. The in general interface will be familiar to user of PSE variants as far back as PSE six or 7. It incorporates most of the many image merge functions familiar to users since PSE 7. As with last variants, PSE ten offers this for a small percentage of the cost of its big brother Photoshop CS5. Most amateur photographers and many frugal professionals can perform all but the most advanced digital editing with PSE ten (and then use the money saved for many nice new hardware!).

Note: This review assumes many familiarity with digital photography and digital image notions, and last contact to earlier PSE variants.

Installation:
No issues with installation on a machine with a new (less than two weeks old) install of Windows 7, a dual core three GHZ processor and four GB of RAM.

Unlike PSE 8, PSE ten doesn’t require users to choose if to continue using an earlier variant or use the new variant entirely. You have the choice to use or remove both variant ten and an earlier variant (but you can not do so at the same time: I tried!).

The license for this product permits installation on one main and one “mobile” computer, with the restriction not to use on both computers simultaneously.

Total installation time (including entering the registration code and skimming the EULA) took less than ten minutes. This has been followed by PSE 10′s “Organizer” peforming own indexing of the digital pictures on my computer. Cataloging almost 50,000 digital pictures took somewhat less than an hour. If you are a Windows user and store your pictures in a non default “My Pictures” place under your user name: you will have to tell PSE where to browse for this indexing.

Function and features:
The interface, function and features of PSE ten will be familiar to users of recent PSE variants. The .Psd files are manipulated using layers and selection tools. The complete range of image effects (“filters”), image enhancement and editing tools are generally unchanged since variant 6. Still present are alternatives to open, edit and save in large range of file formats.

PSE ten recognized the scanner on my system, and now allowed imports of scanned pictures using both the scanner’s proprietary interface (Epson software) and the generic WIA Windows Image Acquisition, the replacement to TWAIN) alternatives.

Output to the printers on my system was trouble free. Accepting the default printing alternatives yielded good results, but advanced alternatives for those who like to tweak are readily available. PSE ten effectively offered alternatives to print to the two physical (laserjet, inkjet) and two virtual (Acrobat and Microsoft Document Writer) printers attached to my desktop.

Issues:
PSE ten and Adobe continue to assume plenty about user connectivity. All of the help files for PSE ten are online. Choose “Help” in the menu bar (or press the “F1″ key), and you aren’t taken to local help files.You are taken to adobe.Com. This is good if you’re connected to the Internet, but less good if you aren’t (and many people aren’t connected at all times). You may be able to optionally download a 27 MB .Pdf user guide. This is an choice you will want to exercise if you anticipate needing help while not online or if you have bandwidth constraints where you work.

Adobe also continues to also push its online services hard. At install, and every time you launch PSE 10, you’ll be invited to enter your “Adobe Online ID”. If you register (and you will most likely want to just for update notifications), you will get many free services (2 GB of storage and many sharing functions). This looks to be aimed at two things:
(1) tracking use behavior of users (my opinion only; but read the EULA carefully!)
(2) enticing you into the $49.99 per year “PSE ten Plus” services (20 GB of online storage and many sharing and effects services). While I suppose the integration with PSE is nice, you may be able to register your domain with unlimited storage from hundreds of providers for less than this. Resist!

As long as you download the .Pdf file so you can access help files when offline, and remain aware of what any software company can be doing when they solicit you to use the online extensions of their products: these aren’t serious shortcomings. But my suspicions about how Adobe may track user behavior and over reliance on online help files are what move this from a 5 star to a 4 star review.

Finally:
PSE 10, like all of its predecessors is feature concentrated. Powerful users will gain from extra help. Also to widely available online forums (hosted by Adobe and elsewhere on the web; search liked video sites for step by steps on the most advanced functions), a reference book will improve your user experience. Remember: technology is complicated, and you are not a dummy! Rather than something in yellow and black that calls you names, think about the Photoshop Elements ten “Missing Manual” instead.

My copy shipped with a $20 gift card for online printing services from Shutterfly (available with any buy of $20 or more), a trial variant of Adobe Premiere Elements ten (for video editing; $79 to activate), which installed concurrently (and optionally) with PSE 10. I have a working earlier variant of Premier Elements, so just uninstalled this trial variant. Also included in this package was an installation CD for a 30 day trial of Lightroom 3, which I didn’t install.

The physical media for PSE ten consists of thee three DVDs, One is for Windows users (Disc 1), one for Mac users (Disc 3). I was never prompted to do anything with the unexplained “Disc 2″; possibly it’s Mac unique?

PSE ten is a powerful image editing tool priced right for buyers. Buy with confidence. Is it worth upgrading from variant eight or 9? Most likely not. But if you are prepared to do take on many powerful editing of your digital pictures, PSE ten is a good choice if you do not already run a recent earlier variant.

I downgraded from Photoshop CS(x) as I not needed such a powerful program. Adobe Elements offers all of the features that majority home users want or need. I have given it four stars instead of five because I think the Help part is missing.

As to the other reviewer who gave this program one star, I have to point out that Adobe Photoshop Elements isn’t movie editing software. It’s photo editing software. Possibly she referred to Adobe Premiere Elements, which is a movie editing software application.
